Disgrifiad
Adeiladwyd Traphont Dd'r Pontcysyllte rhwng 1796 a 1805 i gario Camlas Ellesmere dros Afon Dyfrdwy, gan gysylltu pentrefi Froncysyllte a Threfor a oedd ar y naill ochr a'r llall i'r dyffryn. Fe'i cynlluniwyd a'i hadeiladu gan y peiriannydd sifil Thomas Telford, yn gweithredu fel Asiant Cyffredinol, a'r peiriannydd ymgynghorol mwy profiadol, William Jessop, a wnaeth yr arolygon o'r safle a chynghori ar y dulliau gorau o weithredu. Costiodd adeiladu Traphont Dd'r Pontcysyllte £47,000. Yn 39 metr o uchder a 307 metr ar ei hyd, mae nawr y draphont dd'r hiraf y gellir hwylio drosti ym Mhrydain a'r uchaf yn y byd.

Mae'r draphont yn cynnwys deunaw o bileri carreg sy'n cynnal cafn o haearn bwrw sy'n ffurfio'r gamlas. Mae'r pileri'n wag tu mewn ac yn meinhau at y brig er mwyn lleihau eu pwysau ac felly alluogi codi adeiladwaith mor uchel. Ar gyfer mortar, dywedir bod y peirianwyr wedi dibynnu ar gymysgedd o galch, d'r a gwaed bustych. Nid yw'r cafn haearn bwrw wedi ei gysylltu a'r gwaith cerrig, ond mae'n gorffwys yn unig ar ben cyfres o asennau haearn sy'n codi o bob piler ac fe'i delir yn ei le gan bwysau'r d'r yn unig. Disodlwyd y llwybr halio gwreiddiol yn 1831 gan gynllun cantilifer a oedd yn galluogi i dd'r a symudid gan gychod yn pasio lifo o dano, gan leihau ataliad.

Adeiladwyd y draphont dd'r ar yr adeg yr oedd twristiaeth fodern yn dechrau dod i Gymru. Ymysg yr ymwelwyr cyfandirol cynnar oedd yr Archddug John o Awstria. Gyda diwedd y Rhyfeloedd Napoleonaidd, manteisiodd ar y cyfle i deithio i Gymru yn 1816. Canmolodd harddwch dyffryn Dyfrdwy yn gyffredinol ac yna argymhellodd yn arbennig y dylid edrych ar y draphont o lawr y dyffryn o dani oherwydd bod hynny'n galluogi rhywun i werthfawrogi ei hadeiladwaith cywrain yn well. Roedd gan ymwelwyr eraill lai o ddiddordeb yn agweddau peirianneg y draphont, gan ei gwerthfawrogi'n fwy am ei harddwch pensaerniol a'i chytgord a'r tirwedd o'i chwmpas. Ar 22 Mehefin 1830, paentiodd yr arlunydd tirluniau o Ffrainc, Alphonse Dousseau, ddarlun dyfrlliw manwl gywir o Draphont Dd'r Pontcysyllte. Yn gefndir iddi roedd dyffryn hardd y Ddyfrdwy ar fachlud haul ac adfeilion Castell Dinas Bran yn y pellter.

Yn 2009 dynodwyd Traphont Dd'r Pontcysyllte yn Safle Treftadaeth Byd gan UNESCO, gan gydnabod ei chynllun peirianneg arloesol a'i phwysigrwydd mawr yn natblygiad hanesyddol camlesi ym Mhrydain.

Cofnod wedi ei ddiweddaru fel rhan o'r prosiect 'Taith i'r Gorffennol: Cymru mewn teithlyfrau o Ffrainc a'r Almaen' a gyllidir gan yr AHRC.
