Foundations of parts of the cloister and church of a medieval monastic establishment were recorded at the turn of the 20th century. This has been identified as the Dominican Friary, although the traditional site lies closer to the city centre (NPRN 301077).
Several gravestones or coffin lids, of the 13th-15th century, were recovered from the site.

The Dominican Friary was first mentioned in 1251. A refoundation or rebuilding in 1299 my account for the alternate sites. Following the reformation a school was established in part of the buildings.
