The Abersychan Limestone Railway was constructed circa 1826, to transport the raw stone from Cwm Lascarn quarries, to the east of Abersychan, to the British Ironworks (NPRN 85082). The railway ran south from the quarry on the east side of the valley for more than 1.7km before dropping to the valley floor by means of an incline, crossing the river and continuing (partly via the Blaenavon railway) to reach the Ironworks. The railway was in use for over 20 years and used an unusual form of rail (wrought iron fish-belly rail) which was unique in South Wales.
