DisgrifiadThe Lewis Merthyr Colliery Workmen's Hall & Institute opened on this site initially in 1919. At the time it was a shop unit attached the Empire Cinema and over the next few years library and reading rooms were developed. The purchase of the site by the Institute Committee and the construction of a fully-equipped workmen's institute was completed by 1924 at a cost of £10,000. Half of this was met through a grant from the Miners' Welfare Fund. This building remained extant and in use until the 1990s. Now demolished, the site is a carpark.
