St Mary's Church or Priory occupies the site of a presumed Celtic Clas, and is traditionally regarded as one of the oldest religious foundations in Wales. Mentioned by Giraldus Cambrensis in c1216 the priory became an Augustinian House soon afterwards, and is referred to as such by the mid thirteenth century. Following fire-damage the church was repaired and restored in the fifteenth-century, further phases of restoration were carried out in the nineteenth and twentieth century. Surviving early medieval fabric includes the north arcade and three east lancets.
