Site Description
Craig Gwrtheyrn hillfort has an irregular enclosure, about 160m north-south by 125m and occupies an isolated hilltop above the Teifi valley. There are traces of a drystone rampart about 2.0-3.0m across, and of additional banks/ditches on all but the precipitous north-east side. The entrance faces south-west and is fronted by up to three lines of ramparts, forming a distinct entrance facade, or approach complex, thought to have included a chevaux de frise. The site is identified with the stronghold of Vortgern, or Gwrtheyrn.
