DescriptionSt Joseph's Catholic church, Penarth was built in 1914-15 in the Lombardic/Italian style, gable entry type to the designs of F. A. Walters.
"Italian Romanesque, on a basilican plan. W. towers not built" (J. Newman, Glamorgan, The buildings of Wales, advis. ed. John Newman (London: Penguin Books, 1995), p. 492.
The church was planned in 3 stages: "Originally the body of the present church was used and a temporary wall built where the altar rail is now. In 1928 the present sanctuary, side chapels and sacristies were prepared. The third portion, twin towers at the west end, have not been added" (Roy Thorne, Penarth, a history, vol. 2 (Starling Press, 1976), pp.198-199.
