Site Description
A large, graceful stone bridge over the River Taff, by William Edwards, completed in 1756 and believed to be the largest single arched bridge then known. The span is 44m and there are stone parapets and approach steps; three circular holes in the haunches of the bridge are to lighten the otherwise heavy construction. The narrowness of the roadway caused traffic congestion and so a new bridge known as Victoria Bridge (nprn 24151) was built in 1857 immediately adjacent to the south; this now carries road traffic and the earlier structure is used as a footbridge.
