A 380 metres long straight pound constructed in a north-eastern direction (from the 9.25 to the 9.63 mile distances from Swansea)to the north of Pontardawe with the north-west bank defined by the foot of the steep Swansea Valley-side scarp & the Canal Channel excavated to form a bank on its south-eastern bank holding the canal some 1.5 metres above the River Tawe floodplain. The former Waun-y-coed Branch Canal diverges south-west from this pound. This section of the canal still exists in water to its full width and the towing-path is walkable. This section of the Swansea Canal was built in 1796-98 by the engineer Thomas Sheasby Senior and commercial traffic ceased in the 1930s.
