Description

On an east facing slope between 380m and 420m above O.D. are the remains of a settlement comprising two enclosures (one apparently unfinished), several rectangular building platforms (most with building remains upon them) and a small number of stone piles. The entire group is probably of Medieval or later date.

The enclosures are centred on SN98521229 and SN98421242 respectively. The first measures 50m (E-W) by 45m and is bounded by a low stony bank 2m wide and 0.2m high, with an entrance on the N side. The second is defined on only two sides by a discontinuous grassy bank 2m wide and 0.4m high, which runs NW from SN98681233 for 120m, then NE for 140m to SN98741251. Grouped around the enclosures are the remains of at least 11 buildings defined by tumbled stone walls, most built upon platforms cut into the hillside, long axes at right angles to the slope. The most prominent are as follows:
SN98551231: 10m by 7m overall, walls 2m wide, 0.4m high.
SN98571232: 7m by 3m internally, walls 1m wide, 0.3m high.
SN98571238: 6m by 3m internally, walls 1m wide, 0.5m high.
SN98681243: 10m by 6m overall, walls 1.5m wide, 0.3m high.
SN98681250: 10m by 5m overall, walls 0.8m high surmounting a bank 1.5m wide.
SN98661244: grassy platform, 17m by 9m, cut back 1.2m deep, built out 0.8m high.
