Description
Llay Hall Colliery was opened in 1877 by the Llay Hall Coal, Iron and Fireclay Company. The mine was nationalised in 1947 but closed soon after as a result of a serious underground explosion. A winding and fan house (nprn 400790), workshops (nprn 400788), chimney (nprn 400787) and later washery building (nprn 400789) survive, as do some ancillary buildings, such as a weighbridge house at grid reference SJ 31453 55210.
