Description
Barry Garden Suburb is an area of housing on the western edge of the town, built on a high plateau over the tunnel carrying the Glamorgan coast railway line. Development of the area was begun in 1915 by Barry Garden Suburb Ltd, a public utility housing society and included Porth-y-castell, Westward Rise, Bron Awelon and Tan-y-fron. The estate is a particularly fine example of its kind and the three hundred or so buildings generally retain their original character if not their external appearance which has been altered by almost universal modern replacement doors and windows, television aerials and substitution of tiles for slates on some houses.
