North portal of Chirk Tunnel (NPRN 34408) on the Llangollen Canal - one of the first British canal tunnels to have a towing-path constructed through it.

The tunnel, designed by the engineers William Jessop and Thomas Telford was constructed between 1794 and 1802. The north facade is of stone, with an arched portal with ashlar voussoirs and raised keystone.

Louise Barker, RCAHMW, 14th September 2007.
