Description
Abercynon Colliery is situated at the junction of the Taff and Cynon Valleys. The Dowlais Iron Company sank the colliery between 1889 and 1896 to supply their new steel works at Cardiff. It was the last sinking in the Cynon Valley and was then known as Dowlais Cardiff Colliery. It became linked to the Lady Windsor Colliery (Nprn 33491) in 1973 and both collieries were worked as a single unit. It closed in 1988.

The colliery was first depicted by OS mapping, as Dowlais Cardiff Colliery, on County series 2nd ed. (Glamorgan. XXVIII.3 1900).
