Description
This site is marked on the OS map as "Tip (dis)" and "Quarry (dis)". It is quite a big excavation on a steep hillside but nonetheless probably only an abandoned trial, for slate. It consists of a rock-cut pit about 12m deep and 8m x 6m at its base. This pit is itself approached by a rock cut gulley about 23m long and 1.5m wide which is entered by way of a kind of rough terrace. Spoil surrounds the gulley, its approach and also below the site for about30 m where this spoil isformed into level terraces each about 10-12m wide one above the other. A low drystone wall partially protects the pit a few metres from its edge.
